Most businesses need as least one federal, state or local license or permit to operate. Licenses and permits vary by industry, local requirements, and location so it's very important to understand the rules for your business.
Federal Permits/Licenses
If your business is involved in activities supervised and regulated by a federal agency, you may need to obtain a
federal license.
Occupational Permits/Licenses and Renewals
Kentucky doesn't have a statewide business license that applies to all businesses, but certain types of businesses are required to have a special license or permit to operate legally. In some cases, more than one
state license may be required.
The
Kentucky Department of Professional Licensing offers
Online License Renewal and fee payment by credit card, and an
Online License Verification System for many professional licenses in Kentucky. Please note that certain professions require the submission of supplemental paperwork prior to the approval of your renewal.
Environmental Permits
If your business will produce air emissions, discharge waste water, withdraw water from a stream or groundwater, generate hazardous waste or dispose of waste on site, it is possible that your business will need to obtain an
environmental permit or authorization prior to engaging in these activities. Some permits are required before a business can begin
construction.
Businesses are encouraged to contact the
Division of Compliance Assistance to ensure that they have a comprehensive understanding of all of the permits or authorizations that may apply to their unique circumstances. For businesses operating in Jefferson County, also refer to the
Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District permits page.
